7 Questions to Ask when the Job Search Isn't Working

A job search can be especially grueling in a tough job market, and I hear from so many people who are feeling discouraged. They are working hard to cut through the noise in this competitive environment.

Many of them have done the hard work of filling out ALL those job applications, sometimes hundreds of them. Some have been searching for months or even years, struggling to move forward.

I often get asked: "What am I doing wrong?" When assessing your job search process, here are a few key questions to ask yourself to determine where to focus your attention:

Who am I reaching out to?

In such a tough job market the connections you make with other people are the most crucial in helping you to find opportunities. Have you been reaching out to your contacts on a weekly basis and connecting with others?

What type of jobs are you applying to?

Have you been getting any responses or interview request? If not, take a look at the type of jobs that you have been applying to. How directly relevant are they to the type of recent experience that you have?

Alternate roles?

Making a transition or returning to the workforce can be super tough during a tight job market. Sometimes we might need to consider an alternative position to tide us over until we can move back into the type of role we truly desire. Are there other jobs that may be easier to obtain to help bridge the gap?

Open to volunteering?

Is there any relevant training or volunteer work that you could do in the meantime, that would be relevant and transferable? This can enhance your resume and even open other doors for you.

How many applications are you submitting on a weekly basis?

In a super tight economy, it may take more applications over a longer period of time. Especially if you are pivoting in your career or returning after a career break. This could mean 2-3 per day or 10-15 per week to be competitive and in a tough market as much as 15-20 per week.

How available & prompt are you?

Have you been responding back timely when getting requests and keeping your schedule open to meet with potential interviewers?

Anything else?

Is there any other doubt that you have or issue that is limiting your confidence in your job search? Sometimes, factors like fear of interviewing, lack of confidence, or fear of ageism can block progress.
